When I awoke one winter morning
Outside my window I could seeThat snow had fallen through the night
While I slept peacefully.
As I looked through the frosted pane
Two cardinals came into view--
One was a vivid red male,
And a female in a paler hue.
They flew onto my pine tree
And shook off some excess snow.
The green of pine needles appeared
Creating a colorful show.
Winter is drab and dreary
With skies so dull and gray.
The brilliance of the cardinals
Surely cheered my day.
